Hundreds of Ugandans. Two running distances. One shared commitment to protecting the country's birdlife, particularly the endangered Grey Crowned Crane.

On 18 October 2026, runners, conservationists and community members gathered at Sheraton Gardens in Kampala for the second edition of Run for Birds, organised by Avian Conservation Uganda. Through 5km and 10km runs, participants contributed their time, energy and public visibility to a cause that extends beyond the running track: protecting Uganda's birds and the habitats they depend on.

This year's campaign, themed "For the Cranes This Year", drew attention to the Grey Crowned Crane, Uganda's national bird. A nationwide census conducted in 2023 recorded 10,077 cranes, with their survival increasingly threatened by habitat destruction, agricultural expansion and other human activities. By bringing conservation into a public gathering, Run for Birds demonstrated how collective participation can help turn environmental concern into a shared community responsibility.
