GIVING DIGEST: Rotary Club of Lubowa Launches Malaria Prevention Hub in Mbale
In the true spirit of giving and community care, the Rotary Club of Lubowa has launched a $10,000 malaria prevention hub at Bukasakya Primary School in Bungokho, Mbale district, one of the regions hardest hit by malaria, especially among children and pregnant women.
This act of generosity goes beyond a single event. It is a movement of compassion, offering practical tools that empower communities to fight malaria:
· 17 village health teams (VHTs) received bicycles, lamps, and mosquito nets to boost outreach.
· A pledge was made to supply rapid testing kits and anti-malaria drugs to nearby health centers.
· Mosquito-repelling seedlings are being distributed and planted around homes to create safer environments.
· Over 300 patients were treated at a free health camp held during the launch.
Rotary Club president, Rhona Nambo, emphasized that their support complements government efforts, aiming to ensure no one is left behind, especially children and expectant mothers most vulnerable to the disease.
Dr. Martin Olupot of Bunampogo health facility shared how stock-outs of malaria medication have left families struggling. Through Rotary’s intervention, communities are not just receiving medicine, they are receiving hope, dignity, and a renewed chance at life.
As Bernard Osenda of Malaria Partners Uganda stated, this pilot project is just the beginning. Success in Bungokho could pave the way for a nationwide expansion, bringing life-saving interventions to more malaria-endemic regions across Uganda.
When we give health, we give life. When we empower communities, we grow a future free from preventable disease. Rotary’s work in Mbale is a powerful reminder that generosity doesn't just treat illnesses, it heals nations.
