Rotary Cancer Run 2024: Spreading Magic in Every Step
Giving Digest: In the heart of Kampala, the annual Rotary Cancer Run has evolved into a symbol of hope, resilience, and the unbreakable spirit of community. Thousands of participants, from seasoned athletes to families, come together each year to run, walk, and jog in solidarity against cancer. This event is not just about crossing the finish line; it’s about taking strides toward a cancer-free future.
On August 25th, 2024, the UMA Grounds in Lugogo buzzed with energy as Ugandans and international participants gathered for the Rotary Cancer Run 2024 under the theme, Spreading Magic in Every Step. This powerful movement extended beyond Kampala, reaching over 40 towns and cities across Uganda and beyond, drawing more than 50,000 participants.
With a registration fee of UGX 30,000 per person, covering a running kit, the event aimed to raise critical funds for establishing a one-stop cancer treatment facility at Nsambya Hospital. Organizers project the facility’s completion by 2027, marking a significant milestone in the fight against cancer in Uganda.
The Rotary Cancer Run, initially focused on raising funds for cancer treatment and awareness, has grown into one of Uganda’s largest charitable runs. The funds raised have been instrumental in constructing and equipping treatment centers, providing screening services, and supporting ongoing research efforts.
Beyond fundraising, the Rotary Cancer Run plays a vital role in raising awareness about cancer, a devastating disease affecting many Ugandans. The high cost of treatment remains a significant burden, making the Rotary Cancer Run’s work crucial in alleviating this challenge.
