FIDA Uganda's Support at the Kitezi Landfill Tragedy
Giving Digest: Over the weekend, FIDA Uganda, led by Ms. Liliane Byarugaba Adriko, visited the Kitezi Landfill accident site to support those affected by the tragedy. The Kitezi landfill, located in Kasangati, has served as Kampala’s primary waste disposal site since 1997, processing 2,500 tonnes of waste daily. On August 10, 2024, the landfill’s collapse tragically claimed the lives of over 23 residents.
FIDA Uganda’s team provided crucial humanitarian aid on the ground and is now focused on delivering essential legal services to the displaced women and children. With approximately 80% of the camp’s residents being women and children, addressing both their immediate needs and their legal rights is a top priority for the organization.
Under the banner of "Together We Rise," FIDA Uganda is dedicated to empowering and uplifting these families during this challenging time. The team's ongoing efforts reflect their commitment to serving vulnerable communities and advocating for their rights in times of crisis.
