UBL REFLECTS ON THEIR PHILANTHROPIC INITIATIVES OF 2022
Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) released its 2022 environmental impact report in late December 2022, highlighting the company's commitment to sustainable development as a subsidiary of East African Breweries Limited (EABL).
The launch of this report represents a significant milestone for both Uganda Breweries Limited (UBL) and the wider business and philanthropic community, as it represents an example of a private business documenting its philanthropic efforts in such a thorough and organized manner. The report, titled "Resilient. Impactful. Sustainable. Beyond 100 years," outlines UBL's contributions to sustainable development under the East African Breweries Limited (EABL) umbrella, including efforts to preserve natural resources, promote responsible alcohol consumption, and promote inclusion and diversity. By aligning with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals and the Ugandan government's initiatives in climate change and natural resources management, UBL demonstrates its commitment to the long-term success of both the company and the community it serves.
UBL Managing Director Andrew Kilonzo emphasized the significance of sustainability for the company's long-term success and its commitment to supporting Ugandan communities during the report release ceremony. All three EABL subsidiaries, Uganda Breweries, Kenya Breweries, and Serengeti Breweries, publish the EABL Sustainability Report.
One of the report's standout achievements for 2022 was the planting of one million trees as part of the Running Out of Trees (ROOTs) Campaign, a collaboration between the Ministry of Water and Environment and private sector companies. In addition, UBL teamed up with the Buganda Kingdom Foundation to improve public access to clean water and sanitation by constructing eight sanitation facilities in various markets. The company also drilled and outfitted 20 boreholes in Northern and Eastern Uganda to serve over 6,000 people in the Teso and Lango subregions. Finally, through various forms of media, UBL's Taasa Obutonde plastic waste management campaign reached over 2.5 million people.
