UGANDA BAATI LIMITED SET TO RESTORE FOREST COVERAGE
Uganda Baati Limited (UBL), a member of the Safal Group and a leading manufacturer of building solutions in Africa, recently signed an agreement with the National Forestry Authority (NFA) of Uganda to replant 40 hectares of indigenous trees across the country. The partnership was launched with a tree planting exercise at the Bajo Forest Reserve in the Kayunga district, where the first ten hectares of forest cover were restored. UBL and NFA employees, as well as members of the local community, participated in the exercise.
Current statistics show that Uganda is at risk of losing all its forests within the next 25 years, which has already had severe consequences for the country. The dry season has become longer and more prone to droughts, heavy rainfall has caused deadly floods due to loose soil, and crop yields have decreased. In the past, the country had 53% forest cover, but this has now reduced to just 12%. The partnership between UBL and NFA is a step in the right direction to combat this trend and address climate change.
In addition to the tree planting initiative, UBL has recently, teamed up with Uganda Hockey for a campaign in which a tree is planted for every goal scored during the season. The focus of these restoration activities will be on 5 hectares within Mabira Forest.
UBL is committed to being a responsible and involved corporate citizen, and has identified four focus areas for its social investment efforts: environment, shelter, health, and education. The tree planting partnership with the NFA falls under the environment pillar and will contribute to the realization of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), specifically SDG 13 (Climate Change) and SDG 17 (Partnerships). The Uganda Baati Board Chairman, Dr. Alan Shonubi, emphasized the company's commitment to leading the way in reducing the impact of climate change and protecting the environment for the future.
