Chevening alumni seek Shs. 150 million for PWDs and refugees

Have you ever been the recipient of someone else's generosity? How did you react to it? Joy? A desire to share that happiness? The Chevening Alumni Association of Uganda (a collective of recipients of the prestigious Chevening Scholarship) has decided to propel this chain of generosity.

The Chevening Alumni Association of Uganda (CAAU) is a platform that brings together the beneficiaries of the British Government’s Chevening Scholarship. The Association started a fundraising campaign to raise 155million Uganda Shillings that will go towards the construction of a modern resource centre for children with disabilities at Kampala School for the Physically Handicapped and a computer lab for urban refugees.

The Chevening Scholarship requires its beneficiaries to give back to their community in the U.K during their studies and in their home countries upon completion of their studies. Ms. Helena Kawesa, CAAU's chairperson said the current initiative is in accordance with the association's commitment to give back to their communities.

The giving venture will be undertaken in partnership with the Young African Refugees for Integrated Developments (YARID) that has over the years been in the business of empowering urban refugees through diverse interventions to conduct training in refugees’ legal and gender rights and entrepreneurship.

CAAU hopes that this intervention will help refugees gain self-sufficiency while also providing a platform for them to learn English, which is essential for communicating in the Ugandan community where they live. The modern resource centre for disabled children, on the other hand, will help to promote inclusive education.
