Rotary Uganda holds a virtual cancer run.
“Cancer cannot cripple love, it cannot shatter hope, it cannot conquer the spirit. In the fight against cancer, we run better and stronger together.”
For patients with cancer, the future is often unknown, and hope is what keeps them alive to endure treatments and social and personal adversities. Rotary Uganda is giving this much needed hope to cancer patients. For the past 10 years, Rotary Uganda has been unwaveringly committed to lighting a candle of hope for cancer patients in Uganda.
The Rotary Cancer Run is a primary source of funding for the Uganda Rotary Cancer Program, which began in 2012. The first Rotary Cancer Run was hosted at Kampala's Lugogo Shopping Mall. Since then, the yearly fundraising event in Uganda has expanded rapidly from 100 to over 50,000 participants, both corporate and individual. This expansion has not been limited to Uganda, but also to five major cities, including Kigali, Mombasa, Pretoria, Berlin, and Moscow, which all participate in the marathon on the same day and time.
Rotary Uganda held a virtual cancer marathon in 2021 to commemorate the drive's tenth anniversary in the fight against cancer. The event was co-sponsored by Centenary Bank. In accordance with the COVID19 regulations, the participants ran inside the limits of their houses and communities to prevent massive crowds, which would have contravened the standard operating standards in effect at the time.
The Chief Runner, Fabian Kasi, the Managing Director of Centenary Bank commended Rotary’s 10 resilient years of raising awareness against cancer and bringing people together to find a solution to this scourge.
“I therefore take this opportunity to show appreciation to everyone who has participated in this noble cause across the country and beyond. Your endeavors demonstrate a commendable will to overcome cancer,” he said.
The virtual run was sponsored by the Parliament of Uganda, Centenary Bank, New Vision, Rwenzori Bottling Company, Simba, Lycamobile, and a number of other corporate and individual sponsors.
Companies, Non-Governmental Organizations, Foundations, and individuals were asked to retain the same giving attitude in the battle against cancer as the Cancer Run launched on a new 10-year push. On behalf of the Buganda Kingdom, Owek. Charles Peter Mayiga, Katikiro of Buganda, also approved the event. During the occasion in Muyenga, Past District Governor Stephen Mwanje expressed Rotary's gratitude for the amazing support from Ugandans and individuals from all over the world for running virtually.
All proceeds from the race will go toward the construction of two bunkers at Nsambya Hospital. Rotary Uganda will import two cancer testing and treatment devices, which will be housed in the two bunkers. Rotary Uganda is also committed to teaching medical personnel in cancer therapy. The virtual run is not an end in itself for Rotary Uganda, but rather a tool to further the battle against cancer.
“Cancer cannot cripple love, it cannot shatter hope, it cannot conquer the spirit. In the fight against cancer, we run better and stronger together.”
