Giving takes various forms, and mentorship is one of them. It is the gift that keeps on giving!  Mentorship has its foundation in the fact that we all have something to teach and something to learn. It is a way of repurposing our time and experiences, helping others to grow. The Uganda Women Entrepreneurs Association Limited (UWEAL) has done this for Ugandan women in business.

UWEAL is a membership-based organisation established in 1987 by four visionary women in business, at a  time when the idea of women in business was considered taboo in Uganda. They set out to change perception and set up a platform to promote women in business Uganda and network with other women in business globally. In 2021, their vision still holds. UWEAL has recently set out to set up a pioneer incubation centre that seeks to mentor female-owned businesses.

“We want to set up the first ever women incubation centre in Uganda to promote the development of competitive, profitable and sustainable businesses in agriculture and ICT among women and girl entrepreneurs,” said UWEAL chairperson Dr Barbara Ofwono Buyondo.

The idea was birthed by the findings of numerous studies that unveiled the challenges women entrepreneurs face, yet women own 33% of businesses in Uganda. Accordingly, UWEAL intends to commence the facility's construction that will house 28 incubation spaces for new and high growth women enterprises and 80 virtual incubation spaces.

To achieve this, UWEAL started a fundraising drive for 25 billion Uganda Shillings to set up the facility and fulfill a dream they conceived many years ago.
