Presidential Model for philanthropy!

Dr. John Nkengasong, director of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his work defending the health of people all over the world.

Nkengasong has been at the forefront of global public health for decades, contributing in various capacities to institutions like the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and serving on the board of directors for groups like the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Initiatives. Since the center's inception five years ago, he has served as its director and been instrumental in Africa's efforts to deal with the COVID-19 pandemic.

From his work in the early days of the HIV epidemic to his remarkable leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, "Dr. Nkengasong has served and led in key regional, continental, and global roles," Paxson noted in his award speech. We acknowledge and value his advocacy on behalf of vulnerable people in Africa and around the world over the past two and a half years of the pandemic.
