Melinda Gates Shifts Her Wealth Away from the Gates Foundation.

Amazing things happen when trust is given, and control is turned over, especially when individuals invested in are fully involved in the success of their community. Last year, in her Giving Pledge letter, Melinda emphasized the significance of trusting the individuals and organizations with whom she would be partnering, enabling them to define success on their own terms.

Melinda has shared some of the things she has learned over the years. One of these stands out above the rest: the significance of ensuring that the people closest to the problems are involved in creating solutions.

"It's much easier to imagine that you have all the answers when you're sitting in a conference room in Seattle than when you're face-to-face with a business owner in Nairobi or an indigenous activist in New Mexico who is telling you in her own words about her hopes for the future and the challenges she sees to realizing them."

To that end, she believes that generosity will be most effective when flexibility takes precedence over ideology. Accordingly, she believes that her work will continue to seek out new partners, ideas, and viewpoints to guarantee that successful, meaningful philanthropy is about more than just controlling giving but relying on recipients to do what is best.
