GIVING DIGEST: Addressing Uganda’s Blood Deficit, One Donation at a Time

In a heartfelt call for action, Dr. Samuel Davis Wante of the Uganda Blood Transfusion Services highlighted that public ignorance about the importance of blood donation remains a major reason hospitals face severe shortages.

Today, Uganda collects only 86% of the blood it needs, falling short of the 450,000 units demanded annually. Yet, the solution is within reach: if just 1% of Ugandans donated blood, the country would have a safe and sustainable supply.

Last Thursday, the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC) organized a blood donation medical camp across Kampala, a powerful act of corporate social responsibility focused on saving lives.
Through this effort, dozens of everyday heroes stepped forward, recognizing that giving blood is one of the simplest yet most profound gifts one can offer.

Why Blood Donation Matters:

  • A single donation can save up to three lives.

  • Regular donation (every 7–12 months) promotes personal health.

  • Blood shortages impact vulnerable groups the most, especially mothers during childbirth and malaria patients.

With Uganda’s population now at 45.9 million and diseases like malaria increasing demand, generous acts like these are more crucial than ever. UNOC’s initiative is a reminder that true leadership lies in giving, not just to grow businesses, but to grow healthier communities.

When we give blood, we give life, hope, and healing. Every drop counts. Every donor matters.
