KABAKA’S BIRTHDAY RUN 2024: INCLUSIVITY IN THE FIGHT AGAINST HIV/AIDS

Giving Digest: This April, the revered Kabaka's Birthday Run commemorated its 11th year, drawing global participants to celebrate the current monarch, Ronald Muwenda Mutebi II, and support a vital humanitarian effort. Focused on "Men Against HIV/AIDS to Save the Girl Child," the event cast a spotlight on the persistent battle against HIV/AIDS, in spite of advancements in treatment options. Gathering more than 110,000 people at Mengo Hill, the run stood as a poignant testament to solidarity and commitment.

Uganda has long been at the forefront of the global battle against HIV/AIDS, experiencing its initial impact in the mid-1980s. Since the late 1990s, Uganda has distinguished itself as a pioneer in sub-Saharan Africa by successfully staging an open battle to reverse the  HIV epidemic. But despite extensive awareness campaigns and the availability of preventive measures such as free condoms and antiretroviral drugs (ARVs) for those infected, the nation's HIV/AIDS prevalence remains at 6.50%, posing persistent risks, particularly for vulnerable groups like women and children.

To address this ongoing challenge, Uganda, alongside other heavily affected countries, has implemented various measures, including awareness programs, affordable provision of antiretroviral medication, and rigorous monitoring of HIV-positive pregnant women to prevent mother-to-child transmission. Fundraising initiatives have also played a crucial role in supporting these efforts. The Kabaka’s Birthday Run of 2024 exemplified one such fundraising endeavor, urging men to prioritize their health and protect women against HIV/AIDS.

With approximately 1000 new infections reported weekly among youth, the need for collective action against the epidemic remains urgent.

Every act of generosity aimed at promoting the health and well-being of others deserves recognition and support, ensuring a brighter future for all. We extend our commendations to the Buganda Kingdom and Airtel Uganda, the major sponsors of this impactful event.
