Nyaka supporting grandmothers and children in Uganda.

Giving Digest: In southwest Uganda, the Nyaka AIDS Orphans Project is making a significant impact on the lives of thousands of grandmothers and vulnerable children. Their initiative supports 15,000 grandmothers across three districts, who have taken on the responsibility of caring for over 60,000 orphaned or abandoned children, including their own grandchildren. To empower these grandmothers and provide a better life for the children in their care, the project offers extensive training and access to microfinance. Through this support, the grandmothers can develop new skills, start small businesses, and generate an income to provide food, education, and medical care for the children they care for.

One of the challenges the grandmothers face, has been walking long distances to fetch water for their homes. Last year, Nyaka addressed the water scarcity issue by distributing water harvesting tanks to the grandmothers. One of the beneficiaries, Rosa, a 58-year-old widow raising four orphaned grandchildren, shared her gratitude for the water harvesting tank, which has brought comfort and joy to her family. With the tank, Rosa can now store and harvest enough clean water for her family, relieving them from the hardship of traveling long distances for water during and after the rainy season.
