Vivo Energy Uganda enhances schoolchildren's road safety.

Vivo Energy Uganda has taken a step towards enhancing road safety for schoolchildren with the relaunch of its ‘Heads Up’ initiative. The campaign focuses on addressing the alarming rate of road traffic injuries and fatalities involving children, particularly those who use motorcycles, locally known as ‘boda-bodas’, to commute to school. As part of the initiative, child-specific safety helmets are donated to school-going children, providing them with much-needed protection during their daily journeys.

The ‘Heads Up’ campaign, which was initially launched in 2019 but temporarily suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic, aims to raise awareness about the life-saving benefits of wearing helmets while using public motorcycle transportation. Vivo Energy Uganda, the company that distributes and markets Shell-branded fuels and lubricants in the country, is dedicated to promoting responsible road use and habits, supporting the objectives of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety, which seeks to reduce traffic injuries and fatalities by 2030.

With the involvement of high-ranking officials from various government ministries, the Uganda Police Force, and the school community, the initiative intends to increase access to helmets through donations to children attending public schools. By safeguarding the well-being of schoolchildren, Vivo Energy aims to ensure uninterrupted education and support the government's efforts to improve literacy levels across the nation.

Recognized for its impact, the ‘Heads Up’ campaign previously received a Reputation Builders Award for Uganda during the 2019/20 Vivo Awards held in Cape Town, South Africa.
