UGANDA'S MENTAL HEALTH BURDEN: FDC WOMEN'S LEAGUE DONATES AND CALLS FOR COUNSELORS

Giving digest: The FDC Women's League marked International Women's Day by visiting Uganda's referral hospital for people with psychiatric disorders, Butabika National Referral Hospital. During their visit, they donated essential items to vulnerable mothers and called for the government to establish trained counsellors at each parish to address the country's mental health burden. The league emphasized that women face numerous challenges that require ongoing counselling to prevent mental health issues. The deputy executive director of Butabika Hospital expressed gratitude for the donation and assured that it would reach the intended beneficiaries. The executive director of Butabika National Referral Mental Hospital had previously highlighted the increasing number of psychiatric patients in Uganda, partly attributed to the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic such as loss of loved ones and jobs.
