ROTARACT GIVES TO THE HYDROCEPHALUS AND SPINA BIFIDA INITIATIVE IN UGANDA

Giving Digest: The Rotaract Club of Mengo in Partnership with the Rotaract Club of Kamala Kibuli donated several items to the children housed at the Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Initiative in Bunono, Entebbe in Wakiso District.

Spina bifida and Hydrocephalus are neural tube defects in which an opening in the spine remains open during early development in pregnancy. Neural tube defects affect over 300,000 births globally each year, which makes them one of the most common congenital disorders. They have no cure and can result in permanent disability in severe cases.

The Hydrocephalus and Spina Bifida Initiative in Entebbe is a facility that houses approximately 89 children with these health conditions under its care. This facility and the children entirely depend on the mercy of well-wishers and donations.

Rotaract, a subsidiary of Rotary International, has one of its major goals to provide opportunities for young people to address the needs and concerns of the community and the world. In line with this goal, the Rotaract Clubs of Kampala Kibuli District 9213, and Rotaract Club of Mengo District 9214, made donations of household materials, and sanitary items to improve the lives of the children at the facility. This was done to mark World Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus Day (WSPHD) which is marked annually on the 25th day of October to raise awareness of two conditions that affect the spine and the brain and to advocate for people living with these conditions. and to also contribute to the wellness of children, who despite their health conditions, are human beings like everyone else in the world.

To ensure the continuity of this giving, Ian Owori, the president of the Rotaract Club of Mengo said that the club is willing to bring on board other Rotaract Clubs to ensure continuity of support to this facility.
