INSPIRING MENTAL HEALTH CAREGIVERS
Geraldine Opoka is the founder of the Soul Foundation and is deeply committed to mental health. She is also known for her zumba dance classes, which have helped middle-aged women "feel sexy and beautiful again" since 2014. In 2017, she performed her dance for the staff and patients of Butabika Hospital, establishing a relationship with the hospital.
Last year, the Soul Foundation hosted its first Christmas party at Butabika, and this year, it has partnered with various organizations to deliver food to the hospital every week in 2022. Lot2545, Mandela Millers, Yokuku, KFC, Coca Cola, Fitness Junction Gym, Liberty Insurance, Quality Supermarket, and The Women's Organisation are among these partners. The hospital staff and patients are grateful for the assistance and express their gratitude through words and songs.
Geraldine Opoka and her partners visited Butabika Hospital on December 11, 2022, to deliver food and engage in a mindset-changing outing. During the party, Opoka encouraged the public to start talking about mental health more positively in order to encourage people to seek the help they need rather than deter them from doing so due to the stigma that surrounds mental health challenges. In the midst of a surge in mental health challenges among its population, Uganda has only one national referral mental health institution: Butabika Hospital. This comes at a high cost for mental health professionals and medical personnel. This Christmas party was held to thank the Butabika Hospital Staff for their exceptional work in caring for patients with mental illnesses and providing a special meal to the patients. The Christmas party fed over 1500 patients.
The food was prepared and served to the patients by hospital staff members Hilda, Gonahasa, Cathy, Esther, Barbara, Jamila, and Awuyo. Some patients eagerly awaited their lunch, while others were too sick to move or interact.
Opoka and the Soul Foundation undertook this act of generosity during the Christmas season in order to provide love and support to the patients and their families and to encourage others to do the same.
