STEPPING INTO MY SHOES!
NAROHO STEPS IN TO SUPPORT SCHOOL CHILDREN
It is unfortunately usual for students in some rural areas to trek many miles to school with only the uniforms they are wearing, and the minimal school supplies their families can afford. Parents of these children often forego provision of footwear in order to provide the immediate essentials for their education. Over 30 pupils in the Rubanda district of the Kigezi sub-region now own brand new, authentic Ugandan-made shoes, all thanks to Naroho Uganda.
Naroho Uganda is a grassroots social enterprise and ethical leather accessories brand in Kampala, Uganda, that employs and empowers adolescent girls and single mothers who did not have the chance to complete formal education. It has dedicated itself to training a minimum of 5 young women annually since its inception in making leather products such as handbags, wallets, belts, and purses. The Founder and Creative Director, Ms. Isabel Agol, has always had a passion for helping others discover their full potential.
“It is important to me that I continue to use this enterprise to transform the lives of the women and adolescent girls in my community, as it also gave me a second chance. I was a single mother myself when, being unable to afford sandals while struggling to feed myself and my child, I made a pair by hand. That sparked the idea to produce six more, and when those sold out, Naroho was born,” Isabel says.
This mantra was put into action when, on the 9th of August 2022, Naroho Uganda, as part of a drive to give back to the community, gave a pair of brand-new leather shoes to each of thirty school children. The shoes were made by the organization members. The children were visibly ecstatic upon receiving their new footwear, and wasted no time in donning their new kicks.
