Lions Clubs of Uganda, in partnership with Lions Clubs International Foundation (LCIF) and St Francis Hospital, Nsambya, break ground for specialized eye-clinic:
Philanthropy is nimble, responsive, and engaged in perceiving a need and addressing it. The generous contributions of the Lions Clubs of Uganda to the health sector demonstrates how fast philanthropy is in recognizing and responding to the needs in the health sector.
Over the past five years, the club has contributed over 2 million U.S Dollars towards immunization programs. Their most recent generous contribution has seen the launch of a specialized eye-care clinic in Nsambya. According to the Nile Post, the project is worth 1.4 billion Uganda Shillings, and its construction will reach its completion within the next nine months.
The Chairman Board of Governors for St. Francis Nsambya Hospital, Mr Freddie Ssengooba, stated that the hospital would contribute 400 million Uganda Shillings to cover at least 30 per cent of the construction cost. While the medical facility's location will be at Nsambya Hospital, the eye-care services will be taken to the communities through outreach programs.
Maintaining sight and preventing its loss includes choosing a qualified eye health care provider. This facility will meet the eye-care needs of patients. It will also train the required human resource: Ophthalmologists, optometrists, and opticians needed to address the growing regional and national demand in quality ophthalmic patient care.
The specialized Eye clinic will be a hi-tech eye center dedicated to comprehensive ophthalmic patient care. Its aim: being a national leader in the field of eye care, improving and preserving sight. It will keep pace with standards set by the international ophthalmology community in relation to outstanding patient care as well as in the latest medical advancement.
"The Project also involves training of eye care health workers including opticians, opthalmogists, and technicians. Outreach activities will also be conducted under the auspices of St Francis Hospital, Nsambya to take services nearer to communities." Said Dr. Geoffrey Erem.
