Odur Foundation feeds over 140 families
“We have been victims of stigma, but we feel loved when you come and spend time together with us.”
It started off with a campaign dubbed “Send us to Mayuge.” The aim was to provide food to families that had been hit hard from the COVID-19 induced lockdown. The Odur Foundation is a Community Foundation operating in Mayuge District whose mission is to promote and advance practical community initiatives to alleviate poverty and improve the quality of life of people in the communities they serve. The Foundation reached out to 149 families with food and other supplies. It procured 1.5 tonnes of maize flour, 18 boxes of soap, rice, sugar, plates, cups, and 100 loaves of bread which were gifts from companies, individuals, and friends of the Foundation.
In the presence of GM Sugar Limited, friends, and staff of Odur Foundation, supplies were delivered to 19 families in the Luubu Twezimbe Community of the Blind, 85 families in the Lukone Colony of Lepers, and 45 families of nursery schoolteachers.
According to the Programs Coordinator, the Foundation had initially targeted persons with disabilities as the beneficiaries of this campaign. However, this changed when they conducted a needs assessment and decided to include nursery schoolteachers as well.
“Our campaign targeted people with disabilities but as an organization we chose to include nursery school teachers who have not gone back to work since March 2020.” __ Walwana Mathias (Odur Foundation Programs Coordinator)
Hunger is a community issue that needs a community solution. By working together, we can help change this story and save vulnerable persons from going hungry. The Foundation focuses on helping those struggling to afford a meal. It is vigilant in ensuring the supply of nutritious food to nourish those who need it most and to see a developed community where everyone can access and afford the basic needs of life.
While expressing gratitude for the food and other supplies, a community member from the Lukone Colony of Lepers said, “We have been victims of stigma, but we feel loved when you come and spend time together with us.” Giving not only meets physical needs but emotional ones as well.
