Airtel with Heart: Airtel Uganda gives to Rwenzori Region’s Expectant Mothers

Airtel Uganda donated two mobile ultrasound scans while launching its Airtel Money branch and commissioning

For Airtel Uganda, business, and heart, go together. As the telecom company commissioned three masts in the Rwenzori region, they considered the damage caused by recent floods. Kasese District has been on the receiving end of seasonal floods that have brought life and livelihoods to a standstill. One of the affected aspects of life in the region has been the diminished access to health centres and services due to blocked roads and destruction of some facilities. Airtel Uganda sought out expectant mothers due to the increased risk of maternal death in light of the peril caused by the floods.

Through its corporate social responsibility activities, Airtel Uganda donated two mobile ultrasound scans while launching its Airtel Money branch and commissioning three masts to boost the region's connectivity. The mast set-up was part of Airtel’s drive dubbed 'Vast Network', the telecom’s journey to provide excellent telecommunications services across Uganda – a journey that has seen Airtel Uganda set up over 2,100 sites and layover 5100 kilometres of its own fiber across Uganda.

The ultrasound scans were deployed at Rukoki health centre IV and Nyamirame Health Center IV. Alongside the scans, the team donated Mama Kits and masks under their Airtel Safe Motherhood Program. According to the Nile Post, the program was launched in 2018 to train midwives and birth attendants and utilize the element of the mobile ultrasound scan. The program's objective was to reduce pregnancy-related deaths in Uganda and continue to support expectant mothers in hard-to-reach areas.

“We also appreciate the Safe Motherhood intervention that will go a long way in supporting expectant mothers in hard-to-reach areas.” _ Mr. Masereka Joshua, The Deputy RDC Kasese District

The District Deputy Resident District Commissioner applauded the telecom company for their generous gesture to the Rwenzori Region.
