When you give you receive: Arua nurse gets scholarship

“She wheeled a patient for over 3km to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Her selflessness is heartwarming.”

Remember the nurse in Arua who wheeled a patient in dire need of advanced care to the district hospital kilometers away? Only recently the both the health Minister and Permanent Secretary celebrated her.

“During my visit to Arua District today, I had the opportunity to visit one of my very own heroic health workers, Sr. Doris Okudinia, a nurse at Ediofe Health Centre III in Arua District,” Dr. Acheng said. “She wheeled a patient for over 3km to Arua Regional Referral Hospital for treatment. Her selflessness is heartwarming.”

Turns out that was only the beginning as it is now raining blessing for the kind nurse; she has been given scholarship to advance her studies in an a nursing institute in Lira. A press release by the institute’s director sent a wave of excitement as many continued to celebrate the selfless nurse. Verbatim, it read:

The Uganda Christian Institute School of Nursing and Midwifery Lira, a privately owned not for profit making Medical training Institution in Lira district, has offered a full scholarship to Arua medical worker, Dorish Okundinia.

 Okundinia's photograph recently appeared on various mainstream and social media forums wheeling a patient on a wheelchair from Ediofe Health Centre III where she works to Arua Regional Referral Hospital. We considered her action as a total commitment to enhance a health living, protect lives and boost health service delivery to our people.

The Governing Council, Board of Directors Uganda Christian Institute School of Nursing and Midwifery has viewed her decision as a deliberate commitment to save lives and serving humanities in totality by a trained professional medical worker.

In the view to recognize, appreciate and congratulate comrade Okundinia, the management resolved to reward her with a Full Diploma Scholarship in General nursing valued at 9 Million Uganda Shillings.

The scholarship includes; full tuition, academic requirements and all related cost of training covering her DIPLOMA program with us and all detail shall be shared with the beneficiary formally and soon.

This is just part of our wider scholarship scheme to support our health sector by training and building a team of committed medical workers through affordable and achievable measures.

'We are convinced that by offering our colleague Nurse Okundinia, a full scholarship program to further her education, we shall have directly equipped, and retooled her with a lifetime skills, knowledge, and even supported her to effectively serve our community,' says Rt .Rev.Prof Olwa, the Chairperson Governing Council UCI in his letter to the Permanent Secretary Ministry of Health.

We have talked to Nurse Okundinia and congratulated her upon her courageous display of super talent and even encouraged her to maintain the spirit, and in the same way, we further encourage every health worker, not only to emulate the total gesture of commitment by our colleague Okundinia but to do more in serving our people basing on the nurses and midwive's principle of ‘To love and serve'.

Our Scholarship program is being channeled through the Ministry of Health and Arua District leadership, we have written to the Ministry about the same and the beneficiary shall soon be informed and engaged formally about the program.

Once again, we wish to congratulate Nurse Okundinia, Ministry of Health and all medical workers upon their continued sacrifices to protecting health of our people.
