A Conversation Around a Fire

Eighteen female lawyers from the Uganda Law Society gathered for The Experience, a leaders’ retreat organized by CivSource Africa. After braving the rain and travelling by boat and land to an exotic secluded location in Mukono, the evening started with a conversation around a fire. The guests and organizers all introduced themselves, shared their main and side hustles and their expectations for the retreat. This is a dynamic and vibrant group of legal practitioners, pioneers, creatives, entrepreneurs and innovators. These women are mothers, sisters, friends, and lovers who have taken time out to stop and reflect. The fireplace was a warm and open invitation to connect with one another in a place of safety, serenity, and community.

Hope Chigudu, the retreat midwife said, “Conversations do not require a program.” Particularly, conversations that lead us to look inward and self-reflect. The participants are looking forward to the next few days and the ideas that are going to be birthed in their lives, as leaders, as they head into the new year.
