Ajwang’s Facebook post drew her cybernetic friends and well-wishers to react. Many responded to her appeal and raised UGX 12 million of the money needed for the surgery.

Social media has greater power for marketing, communication and advertising. And Facebook which ranks high in the social media pedestal, is one of the most powerful digital marketing channels from almost every aspect available. And certainly, it has helped in being the tool that Lydia Ajwang used to mobilize funds to aid her mother’s medical procedure.

This week, Ajwang made a plea to the public to save her mother, who was diagnosed with a spinal cord disorder, that has left her paralyzed for a while. She wrote that her mother, Mrs. Adongo Lily, a headteacher at Bata Secondary School, in Dokolo District, in Northern Uganda, has a condition that has incapacitated her physical alertness.

Explaining the cause of the paralysis, Ajwang wrote: “It is a meningioma, a tumor in the spinal cord. Doctors say it is inactivating and re-activating her nerves and sensors, thus causing paralysis. She can no longer write, sit, walk or turn herself in bed, however, the Doctors say there is a solution. It involves first removing the tumor from the spinal cord through surgery”.

She added that, “This will help in re-activating her nerves since the nerves will be free to move again; she will, therefore, be able to walk and do basic chores afresh. The surgery costs UGX 23million ($5,400) and this money needs to be raised in one week, which is by 28th July 2020. The longer we wait the worse the condition gets”.

Hope:

“I feel so heavy-hearted, so burdened yet so loved; thanks to my virtual family, thank you for the contributions,” an elated Ajwang wrote. “Through you all, my mummy can be able to walk again. Every cent counts.”
