Often, the best way to preach a gospel, is to practice it. CivSource Africa(CSA) staff chose to put into practice what their slogan “Where Philanthropy and Civil Society meet” says.

In March 2021, CSA staff came together to support Raising Teenagers Uganda (RTU), a non-profit organization which promotes access to good menstrual hygiene kits, sanitary pads and underwear for young girls in Karamoja region so that they can stay in school and complete their education.

Each staff member of the organization contributed an amount which will be delivered by the CivSource Africa team leader, Jacqueline Asiimwe, to the team at RTU. The money will go into a pool of resources contributed by various well-wishers and philanthropists to support the girl child in the Karamoja region and Kamuli district.

Hitherto, CivSource has supported the work of RTU through participation in the annual hike events around different mountain destinations. The proceeds from the hikes have been used, to purchase sanitary pads for teenagers in Mukono, Wakiso, Sheema and Bushenyi districts, who cannot afford to buy them. Menstrual hygiene is a critical issue for young girls because in many cases, it the difference between them being able to attend school or not.

According to Hope Nankunda, the founder of Raising Teenagers Uganda, they are looking forward to more contributions from various donors, because this goes a long way in helping to meet the expense of buying commercial sanitary pads; curb absenteeism where girls stay at home rather than attending school when menstruating, among others.

RTU is also organizing a hiking excursion to Mt. Moroto in Eastern Uganda in May this year. The 3-day excursion stretching from 28 - 30th May, will also correspond with the day the World commemorates Menstrual hygiene management day on 28th May.

CSA staff join the groundswell to break stigma around menstruation for school going girls and those out of school in rural Uganda. Menstrual hygiene is fundamental to the dignity and wellbeing of women and girls and an important part of the basic hygiene, sanitation and reproductive health services to which every woman and girl has a right.

We are proud to work with a team that not only work to expand the giving space and curate stories of generosity of Ugandans but participate in the work they are championing.

Kudos to you our teammates.
