Dixon has worked tirelessly to raise awareness about climate change and its harmful effects on the environment.

In the hilly town of Qwa-Qwa in South Africa, a determined team has took it upon themselves to transform the sanitation of their community. Piles of unattended food waste were a common sight post the pandemic-imposed lockdown, but this team refused to accept it. They rolled up their sleeves, got their hands dirty, and have since made huge impact. And that's not all – during this selfless work, Team Qwakanda discovered the Gigatonne challenge and they've been on an even greater mission since.

Get ready to be inspired by our amazing guest in this episode. We have the privilege of speaking with Hilda Flavia Nakabuye, a renowned climate and environmental rights activist from Uganda. As the founder of Uganda's Fridays for Future movement, Hilda has been a leading voice in advocating for greater gender equality and racial diversity in the climate change movement. Her inspiring activism includes empowering more women to join the fight against climate change, advocating for saving Lake Victoria, and using her social media platforms to encourage digital awareness about climate change. Hilda's outstanding efforts have earned her international recognition, with features in major news outlets.

In this episode, we talk to Joyeux Mugisho, a refugee, an advocate for the rights of children and a champion against climate change. He has taken on the challenge of addressing the climate crisis through the Gigatonne Challenge - a decentralized global strategy with a focus on equity. In just 48-60 months, this challenge has the potential to completely change the trajectory of the climate crisis. Teams from communities all over the world, including Uganda, are taking part by focusing on composting food waste, transitioning to zero-emissions transportation, food production, renewable energy, and afforestation. This season we take you on a journey of climate philanthropy that is powered by the generosity of communities, foundations, and philanthropy support organizations from Africa and all over the world. We’ll hear from those that have joined one of the greatest climate philanthropy movements, a movement led by the Worldwide Initiative for Grant makers Support.

In this episode, we are hosting the General Manager of the largest family foundation in Turkey Sabanci Foundation – Ms. Nevgül Bilsel Safkan. Their experience exemplifies the best of what responsive philanthropy can accomplish when it is timely and thoughtfully directed. From responding to wildfires through an emergency fund, to the use of art and film to relay the message of climate action, they are taking phenomenal strides in the right direction as they combat the climate emergency.

The Alana Foundation's Executive Director, Las Fleury, discusses the fascinating approaches the Foundation is taking to address these challenges. To raise awareness about the reality of the climate crisis, the foundation is producing films based on the lived experiences of communities in Brazil and around the world that have felt the full brunt of it.

The Executive Director, Naila Farouky, brings a fresh perspective to this conversation, walking us through what it means to rethink an organization's or foundation's philanthropy strategy in order to incorporate climate philanthropy into their work. While individuals, organizations, and foundations are all working to address climate change, they are focusing on specific target groups or thematic areas affected by climate change. Conservation and reforestation are key focus areas for the Belantara Foundation, which works with Indonesian farmers to find solutions to this problem. Dr. Dolly Priatna joins us to discuss this further.
