Reimagining Philanthropy: Envisioning the Future.

The East African Philanthropy Network (EAPN) in partnership with CivSource Africa and Philanthropy Forum for Uganda convened an in-person forum for philanthropy practitioners in Uganda under the theme, “Reimagining Philanthropy, Envisioning the Future.” EAPN is a membership Network that brings together organizations in the East Africa region with the aim of promoting local philanthropy. The network exists to nurture a vibrant philanthropy that contributes to sustainable communities in East Africa. CivSource Africa is a philanthropy support organisation that seeks to refine the practice and footprint of philanthropy in Africa.

The forum was convened on 4th May 2023 at the Protea Skyz Hotel, Kampala. The forum brought together stakeholders in philanthropy to share best practices within their organizations and engage with actors in philanthropy to strengthen the sector within East Africa.

The Kawempe Youth Centre, Fundi Bots, Rotary, and 40-40 Foundation were some of the organisations spotlighted as advancers of collaborative philanthropy. Their leaders presented their approaches and success stories they have encountered while using collaborative philanthropy for collective good, the utilization of technology in enhancing philanthropy.

Tax laws, and the practice of philanthropy formed the key issues for conversation at the forum. The participants explored the role of tax and tax compliance in the enablement or stifling of philanthropy in East Africa. Mr. Tusiime Mark, an expert tax and regulatory manager from KPMG brought a rich experience and insights to the conversation that will serve to strengthen the sector. The day’s session closed with a research validation exercise led by Aude Anquetil from WINGS and members signing up to join working groups of Philanthropy Forum Uganda.
