A Coalition of Donors and New Health Care Providers Is Working to Improve Healthcare in Africa:
To spearhead the healthcare industry's change in Africa, a group of investors and entrepreneurs has formed the African Healthcare Funders Forum. This is the first annual meeting of its type to bring together the most influential donors and social entrepreneurs in Africa.
Boehringer Ingelheim's 'Making More Health' initiative funded the African Healthcare Funders Forum's founding organizations: the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA), Ashoka, and the Social Innovation Circle.
The goal of the event is to catalyze sustainable growth at the speed and scale necessary for greatest impact on the African continent, close the present healthcare funding gap, and promote novel finance approaches.
Dr. Frank Aswani, CEO of the African Venture Philanthropy Alliance (AVPA), has stated that the continent of Africa's health sector, which has previously been viewed as a sector for the public good, represents a massive investment opportunity, with a value of $66 billion per year according to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa. Aswani stated that "the Forum will give a collaborative environment to meet, discuss, and learn from peers on how to best mobilise and deploy money into African healthcare projects and solve funding hurdles," which is crucial to the development of the industry.
