The Landscape of Large-Scale Giving by African Philanthropists

African philanthropy—charitable giving by Africans—has seemed poised for liftoff. Nearly half of the world’s fastest growing economies are African, and the number of wealthy Africans is also growing. There were 177,000 individuals worth $1 million or more on the continent in 2018, up from 164,000 in 2013—and that number is projected to reach over 200,000 by 2023.
