Kasese District in Western Uganda was recently hit by floods, which left many people displaced. Atop imploring the government to rescue her people, the Kasese Woman Member of Parliament, Winnie Kiiza, started a fundraising drive.

“In an effort to support and provide basic amenities to thousands of persons displaced by the Kasese floods, l have partnered with the Rwenzori Social Justice Initiative to launch a fundraising drive under the theme, Contribute and Restore Hope,” she said.

Upon meeting the government, she noticed more was needed, and decided to reach out to the general public. Despite acknowledging government relief efforts, Kiiza demanded that they do better by the women and girls. She demanded that they provide mama kits, sanitary towels, and mosquito nets to pregnant women, women, and girls. Kiiza then started a fundraising drive urging colleagues and the public at large to help Kasese. They responded.

“We have this afternoon received relief food from our sister Hon. Peace Mutuzo, the Bunyangabu District Woman Representative and State Minister for Gender, Labour and Social Development,” she noted. “We have also received three water bowsers from our friend and sister, Hon. Beatrice Anywar, the Kitgum Municipality Representative and State Minister for Water and Environment.” She said that the bowsers will help deliver clean and safe water to the displaced people.

Away from her colleagues at Parliament, Hon Kiiza attracted private-sector donations as well. “I received relief items donated by Counsel Carol Achak, which are directed towards the victims of Kasese floods. Ms. Carol is an advocate at Kiiza and Mugisha Advocates,” she reported. “I also received items donated by Glamour Dry Cleaners towards the victims. They include two mattresses and clothing that were handed over to us by Ms. Olivia Kemiyondo Akiiki.”
