“This piece is a reminder that reconciliation with the past and present cannot be achieved without truthfully confronting history and finding a way forward that is ultimately responsible and reflective and that ensures that we “break the chains” and obtain freedom, justice, and democracy for all humanity,”
His entry is mysterious. It is just sound and subtle movement, no words. When he starts to dance, however, the message is then conveyed. There is no doubt that renowned dancer Jonas Byaruhanga is talented. This dance routine created to express the burden of COVID-19 on the people is magical.
Titled, 'Freedom, Break The Chains', the routine will be featured in the Ubumuntu Arts Festival. According to the festival organisers, the piece is a metaphor for the apocalyptic times we are experiencing now under the added weight of the global COVID-19 pandemic.
He also used the same routine to add his voice to the global George Floyd Rebellions. Jonas specifically challenges us to always remember our ancestors and heritage as Africans, no matter where we are in the world.
“This piece is a reminder that reconciliation with the past and present cannot be achieved without truthfully confronting history and finding a way forward that is ultimately responsible and reflective and that ensures that we “break the chains” and obtain freedom, justice, and democracy for all humanity,” the organisers said.
Though choreographed and performed by the impeccably flexible Jonas Byaruhanga, the poetry is by a distinguished Ugandan poet, Kagayi Ngobi. The concept design is by Charles Ezra Ferell, the melodious music is by Hukwe Zawose. With support from co-sponsors, DR Christoph Traidl, and Charles H. Wright Museum of African American History, the message of healing through the tough times is delivered.
The fact that the routine is effortlessly delivered shouldn't come as a surprise. Jonas, a dancer worth his salt, is also the founder and artistic director of the Keiga Dance Company located at the National theatre. He has danced in stages across the world and been part of several dance festivals. Like he does in most of his routine, he brought passion to this routine.
