Giving Digest: Honouring Service That Built Community
Some giving is quiet, steady, and measured across decades. This week’s story reminds us that generosity is not only about what people donate, but also about how they use their skills, influence, and profession to serve others.
The Rotary Club of Muyenga honoured veteran educationalist and corporate leader John Mary Mpagi for outstanding community service, recognising more than three decades of professional excellence and service to communities. His work has touched education, health, disability inclusion, livelihoods, and environmental conservation, showing what it means to build a life that gives back in practical ways.
From supporting orphaned children through access to quality education, to contributing to health facilities, to helping mobilise resources for environmental restoration, Mpagi’s story is one of service that kept moving where the need was greatest. It is also a reminder that real impact often grows through consistency, mentorship, and a willingness to use one’s profession for more than personal success.
One line from the story says it best:
“Use your profession not merely to build careers and live comfortable lives, but to transform communities.”
In a time when recognition often goes to the loudest work, this honour points us back to something deeper: lives changed, institutions strengthened, and communities served over time.
