Giving Digest: Care That Shows Up

Some giving begins with a calling that refuses to let go. Doreen Confidence Namara’s story is one of care that kept growing until it became a life’s work. Through Doreah Child Care Uganda, she has created a home and learning space for children with special needs, many of whom were abandoned, orphaned, or brought to her with nowhere else to go.

What began as doubt slowly turned into purpose. Namara had trained as a teacher and worked in inclusive education, yet the path before her became clearer through the children society had hidden away. She started a school, opened her doors to children with disabilities, and kept going even when resources were few, facilities were makeshift, and the emotional weight of the work was immense.

Her care reaches far beyond shelter. It includes medical assessments, daily supervision, special diets, education, emotional support, and the patient work of helping children learn, settle, heal, and grow. Some children begin to communicate. Some gain strength through treatment. Some move into mainstream schools. Some reconnect with family. All of them are given something powerful: a chance to live with dignity.

This story reminds us that giving can look like choosing the children everyone else left behind and loving them with enough consistency to build them a future.

“Her work is about more than just caring for these children; it is about giving them a chance to thrive.”
