GIVING DIGEST: Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at Makerere is Giving Futures a Fighting Chance

In a world where talent is universal but opportunity is not, the Mastercard Foundation Scholars Programme at Makerere University is rewriting the narrative. Through a renewed commitment in Phase Two (2024–2034), the programme is offering 190 fully funded scholarships for the 2025/2026 academic year to academically gifted but financially underserved youth across Africa. But this isn’t just about funding education—it’s about giving power, visibility, and voice to young people who might otherwise be left behind.

At the heart of this initiative is a deep belief in equitable access. With 1,000 scholarships planned over the next decade, the programme is intentionally designed to uplift young women (70%), refugees (25%), youth with disabilities (10%), and others from marginalized communities and refugee-hosting areas. It’s giving more than access to a degree, it’s giving a foundation of hope, a seat at the table, and the tools to lead transformation at local, national, and continental levels.

By covering tuition, living expenses, and support services, and by bridging the digital divide through targeted recruitment, Mastercard Foundation isn’t just investing in students, it’s investing in justice, inclusion, and generational change. This is what giving at scale looks like: not charity, but a bold, structured belief in human potential. Because when we give education to the right hands, we don’t just shape scholars, we shape the future.
