Giving Digest: Generosity in Motion at the Butabika Grand Cookout
What began as a simple invitation to the 6th Grand Cookout at Butabika Hospital became a living portrait of African generosity in action. Led by Gerry (Geraldine) Opoka and the Soul Foundation, volunteers came together to cook and share a hearty meal with patients and staff at Butabika – an act of service that, beautifully, coincided with International Volunteer Day (5th December).
In the bustle of chopping, stirring, serving, and sharing, the spirit of community was unmistakable. This was not charity from a distance; it was presence, warmth, and solidarity. Every plate served carried with it dignity and a reminder: you are seen, you matter, you belong.
Gerry and the Soul Foundation createda space where people could give their time, treasure, and talent, and in doing so rediscover the power of community. To every volunteer who showed up, stood over a stove, carried a pot, offered a smile, or held a conversation: this is what generosity looks like in motion.
