Their annual football competition dubbed ‘5 Aside Ug’ was held to raise funds for their first ever children’s resource center.
40 Days over 40 Smiles (simply known as 40-40) is a volunteer-based, charity organization that was established in 2012. It supports underprivileged children and communities to improve their learning outcomes while equipping them with life skills. Over the years, they have worked with over 3,000 children through various interventions such as ICT training, soap making and handcrafts such as the production of bags.
To strengthen these efforts and expand the scope of their outreach, the 40-40 organization is currently raising funds to open their first resource center that will bring educational materials such as books, computers, and other learning aids closer to the children and communities that they serve. The establishment of a resource center is premised on the work with their flagship programme – the Angaza Literacy, which focuses on supporting children in and out of school to be self-aware, agents of community change and resourceful. In schools, 40-40 has implemented this programme in Makindye Division at Quentin Junior School, Merowa Junior School, Boston Junior School and Makindye Community Nursery and Primary School.
To that end, they relaunched their popular football competition known as 5 Aside Ug on the 2nd of July 2022 at the Old Kampala SSS football pitch. Thirty-two teams of 5 players each competed for the top prize, with Mayanja FC emerging the victor. The event also included games like sack racing, board games and bouncy castle for the kids and attracted other participants such as vendors who sold various products and services.
The team leader, Ms. Esther Kalenzi, thanked the participants and event organizers saying, “We were glad to host this fundraising event after 4 years and your support/presence made it worthwhile. We spent 8,648,000 Ug Shillings. to put it together and we were able to raise 9,682,350 Ug Shillings. This means that we have a surplus of 1,034,350 Ug Shillings. for the Angaza Resource Centre. The fact that you sacrificed your resources and attended/donated amidst different hardships and financial commitments is something we do not take for granted. Thank you for showing up and showing out for us, consistently.”
