The Remnant Generation organized a Father’s Day run to fundraise money for their Safe Motherhood Spaces initiative.
Teenage pregnancies in Uganda increased astronomically as a result of the Covid-19 outbreak, with many girls being quarantined at home and thus falling victim to defilement. This was an already pervasive problem that had been afflicting innocent teenage girls across the country, a problem aggravated by the girls' lack of access to inexpensive maternal healthcare.
Recognizing the problem, the Remnant Generation, an NGO that looks out for underprivileged young girls and pregnant teenagers decided to help. Their Safe Motherhood Spaces initiative provides ante-natal and ultrasound services as well as age-appropriate maternal health information among other services. The organization went a step further and decided to tackle the problem of absentee and irresponsible fathers; as they rightly believe that boys and men should be present in protecting, nurturing, and caring for their children.
To that end, this year on 19th June Father’s Day, the Remnant Generation partnered with Fathers Arise, a program that works to restore and mentor boys into responsible men, to organize the Father’s Day Run Fundraiser to support their Safe Motherhood spaces initiative. The run was open to all fathers and even those men who did not have biological children but were fathers at heart.
The Remnant Generation CEO, Ms. Nakabiri Annabelle said the major aim of the run was to raise UGX 150 million to reach out to 1,000 teenage mothers and 1,000 babies in eight Safe Motherhood spaces spread out in four districts in Uganda – Kampala, Wakiso, Lyantonde and Luuka. The run covered the areas of Busega and Lungujja in Kampala.
In spite of the heavy rainfall which started at 4:30 am on the appointed day, it did not deter the scores of participants who turned up to support this very noble cause. The funds from the run were forwarded to underprivileged girls and pregnant teen mothers such that they can access services like group-based and age-appropriate maternal health information, stigma free antenatal care services, mental health care and nutritional support.
