The funds will be placed in a fixed deposit account with the annual interest incrementally used to support Makerere Law Students who are struggling financially.

Inspired by the financial struggle that his grandfather faced while educating his father, Dr. Busingye Kabumba an alumnus and now, lecturer at the Makerere School of Law, birthed the idea to start the Makerere Law Scholarship Fund. Access to education at the School of Law had since turned into a luxury that was accessible by the people who had a stable source of good income. The pandemic and its ripple effect of economic hardships has not made things any better.

The idea birthed in July 2021, has since turned into a full-blown social media fundraising campaign, with many alumni, institutions and numerous well-wishers embracing the initiative.  Scrolling through the Twitter thread of this campaign, one cannot miss two things. The first being the evidence of generosity, trust, and solidarity of people towards this cause. The second is fact that the financial difficulty in raising funds to pay tuition is a common struggle faced by many students.

In the same twitter thread, several tweeps are seen describing their experiences; One tweep described his experience as “indescribable mental distress” and another mentioned how a fellow student paid his tuition on two occasions when he found himself stranded in his first semester as a first-year student.

A conversation with the treasurer of this noble cause, Mr. Percy Mpindi revealed that UGX 14,100,000/= (Fourteen Million one hundred thousand Uganda Shillings) has been collected so far, out of the UGX. 500,000,000/= (Five Hundred Million Uganda Shillings) so far. The goal is to raise this amount over a year. The funds will be placed in a fixed deposit account with the annual interest incrementally used to support Makerere Law Students who are struggling financially. The team envisages that this is a sustainable solution that will in the future, be complemented by other efforts.
