A renown comedy ensemble in Uganda, called Fun Factory comedians have released a hilarious, yet immensely educative video out. The song, a tale of lyrical comedy is basically encouraging the public to always wear masks to prevent the spread of the Corona virus. The introductory verse is effortlessly delivered by the loud “Amos”, a character played by the immensely talented Richard Tuwangye, who is also slated to host the CivSource Africa “Gathering of Givers” event, to celebrate generosity, which will happen this month, on 30th-September.
‘Yambala mask’, is a Luganda phrase translated to mean ‘wear a mask, is the title of the song that has several comedians in their ever so playful element. The song has a lingala beat which is synonymous with music predominantly produced from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). The song is delivered in six dialects – Luganda, Runyakitara, Kiswahili, Lusoga, fragmented lingala and Luo.
The dance-stimulating song is a reminder to the public why exactly they should wear a mask: It helps to prevent the spread of the virus and protect their loved ones.
The comedians cum musicians use the song to also educate about to the symptoms of the virus. This they deliver with immense comic relief that lifts the gloom that the virus has left amongst communities.
Though executed by the comedians, the project was supported by Twaweza- Uganda, a learner-centered organization. Speaking to The Nile Post, Martha Chemutai, the Communications officer at Twaweza East Africa, said that the video was part of a campaign dubbed ‘Together against Covid-19’.
“It is geared towards supporting government efforts by translating critical public health messages from the Ministry of Health into music and comedy so the messages reach the general public” she explained.
Chemutai believes that the fight against COVID-19 is not over until all the members of the public come together and take responsibility for their actions.
