Alex is extremely grateful to all the kind souls out there for making a difference and sharing the little they had to help fund the Prosthetic Accessibility Fund.

While serving in the army, a landmine nearly ended Alex Munyambababzi’s life. However, he was lucky that the mine mostly hit his right leg, shuttering it and left him needing an artificial limb to aid his movement.

This ordeal left Alex deflated because he felt like his future and dreams had been shuttered. The situation left him nearly hopeless. But one day, while still at the military hospital, Alex chose to pick himself up and re-ignite his dreams. He bought books and taught himself about sciences, which in turn precipitated him to return to school. He got admitted to the paramedical school for a diploma in medical laboratory technology. After four years, he went back to Mbarara University for a bachelor’s in medical laboratory science, which he is concurrently undertaking alongside with a bachelor’s in Surgery.

 HOW HE HELPS FELLOW AMPUTEES

Because of his experience, Alex has chosen to help people with disabilities access prosthetic to aid in their movements and to be able to continue doing life with ease. He uses his skills, time and voice to highlight the plight of others who need help.

In March this year, Alex organized an 80km walk from Kampala to Jinja to raise money to buy devices for others in his condition, who cannot afford them. He was joined by other amputees and well-wishers in the grueling yet fun walk through Mabira forest to the town that hosts the source of the river Nile.

According to Henry Mutebe, A philanthropist whose charity workings we highlighted here on our website, he appealed to his social networks to buy each kilometer for UGX. 5000 (about $1.5) with a target of UGX, 1,000,000. By 31st March, the target had been met and Mr. Mutebe transferred UGX 1,053,700 to Alex’s mobile wallet.

Alex is extremely grateful to all the kind souls out there for making a difference and sharing the little they had to help fund the Prosthetic Accessibility Fund.

In his previous expedition, Alex managed to climb Mountain Rwenzori in western Uganda to raise money to help other young people in need of these assistive devices. Now that is beyond inspiring. Climb a mountain!! Rwenzori at that.
