A Giver’s Birthday Trip

“As I geared up to celebrate my birthday again, I knew that this (good) burden God had placed in my heart had to be accomplished, regardless of the COVID-19 situation; this is not a onetime issue,”

Last year, on her birthday, Evelyn Mutengu Nuwagaba awoke to an urge to give. Even though she was excited about the new year, she knew that the day would be incomplete if she didn’t do just that. Her feelings rendered her to reach out to the less privileged school-going girls in the remote village of Buwambo, Namayumba Subcounty in Wakiso District, and donated sanitary items.

It happened again this year; she knew that to celebrate her birthday, she had to give. “As I geared up to celebrate my birthday again, I knew that this (good) burden God had placed in my heart had to be accomplished, regardless of the COVID-19 situation; this is not a onetime issue,” she explained.

Together with friends, Angela Murungi and Hope Nankunda, she set off deep into the village of Nakedde, Namayumba Subcounty, in Wakiso District. They met 30 young girls with whom they prayed, laughed, talked, and shared gift hampers. Each girl walked away with reusable sanitary pads, underwear, and boxes of washing soap.

“The overwhelming smiles and appreciation on their faces melted my heart. Their greatest need is to be able to have a pad, knickers, and soap to help them wash these knickers and clothes,” Nuwagaba recalled.

It might have been important that she donates the sanitary pads, but Nuwagaba also wanted to share the word of God with the girls. Citing her spiritual leader, Apostle Moses Mukisa, she encourages others to not only preach the word of God but help the needy too.

And quite gleefully added: “Today I celebrate my birthday with a smile on my face knowing that I was the hands and feet of Jesus as I pour out my life for his service. To many more birthdays that are life-impacting.”
